They had sold off the foreign rights for cash and then no domestic distributor wanted the film if they didn't have a chance of worldwide profits. So, it sat in a vault for a couple of years, then it showed up on HBO, SHOWTIME, etc. -- and then the Disney Channel. Oddly, while I've discovered that the film has a lot of as you say diehard fans, it never had an afterlife nor did any studios contact me either to write another film or act in one.
